Unlucky in Gaming...
Well, how to put this...
I've been gaming with what feels like the same group since high school. Sure some of the members have shifted and changed but two have remained fairly constant and the dynamic of the group has been, more or less, the same. I have some issues with this group, with the two long term members in particular, but that's not the issue at hand. Suffice to say I've tried to branch out, tried to run games for other groups in the hopes of finding one that seems to better fit me as a GM.
This has been met with varying degrees of failure. The first attempts, oh so long ago, were with a group of players that lived down the street from me. They were an older crowd, college students to me who was just in high school, but they were fun people and didn't seem to mind me too much. I tried gaming with them on a few of separate occasions, they were fun but another situation where life sort of got in the way be it people moving, a baby making it's way into the world or whatnot. Another attempt I've made was with a group of people who were friends of a friend. Some were gamers and one or two were new. We had a good game, a couple good sessions even if it was nothing too terribly original, and all in all had a good time. I can't recall what happened there but it ended after a couple weeks.
The more recent attempts come in three parts. One never really got off the ground; I tried my hand at getting a local Pathfinder Society group together and while I had two people interested I was never able to find anyone else. Then I got a job that made it unrealistic to try with my schedule being what it was. The other two attempts involved the same group, more or less, we ran two campaigns that I had been excited about. They all enjoyed roleplaying their characters and while we goofed off plenty we got so much more done than my other group, went through numerous encounters in a session of gaming and all in all it was a good time. Compared to the other group, this one was one the ball and focused and I could go through a session without hearing a single complaint about something or another. It ended, both times due to scheduling reasons.
The other group? It's always stayed the same, the scheduled day of game has changed, a few members have shifted in and out, but for the most part we've remained the same. Which isn't bad, but I would love to have an alternate group that I could stuck with for more than four sessions. It's almost as though I'm cursed, at least until I move out of state.

I've had some similar experiences, mainly because I have made a couple of big moves and had to find new gaming groups each time. I started playing D&D in junior high school, I believe you call it middle school in the US. I played with same group of guys all through high school and university. Then, I moved away for grad school and had to find a new group. Fortunately, the university I attended had a gaming club and after bouncing around from game to game, I found a group I could relate to. The worst was my second move after I finished school. I got a job a long way away and didn't know anyone. I met some people. They were nerds, but they weren't gamers. So, I made them into gamers...for awhile. Then I joined a group which advertised for players at my FLGS. Ten years later, I have a group with guys from both of these other groups. It's worked out well, except for the fact that we all have wives and most of us have kids. C'est la vie!
